DESCRIPTION
Poland’s clash over the EU green agenda has now turned into a fight over whether voters should even be asked. With electricity prices rising and anger growing over Brussels’ climate rules, President Karol Nawrocki tried to put the question directly to the Polish people.
Michael Heaver looks at the proposal for a referendum on the EU Green Deal and emissions trading system, which critics say are pushing up prices and hurting Polish households and industry. He explains how Nawrocki sent the referendum plan to the Senate for approval, only for it to be blocked by 62 votes to 32. The result leaves the public without a vote on whether Poland should continue down this EU-driven path, while deepening the confrontation between the eurosceptic president and Donald Tusk’s pro-EU government.
