What looks like a setback for Giorgia Meloni is really a much bigger indictment of the EU system itself. Italy’s government promised tougher migration control, yet again found itself blocked, delayed and dragged through legal battles before getting even a partial opening. Michael Heaver examines the pressure now bearing down on Meloni after defeats over judicial reform and the repeated obstruction of Italy’s offshore asylum-processing plan in Albania. He looks at the role of the courts, the opposition’s attacks, and the new opinion from a top EU court adviser suggesting the plan may not in fact breach EU law. But the bigger problem remains stark: a scheme meant to process around 3,000 applications a month has only around 90 people there.
